loft

The project reclaims an underused roof void, transforming it into a generous open-plan master suite defined by light, volume and material continuity.

Location: Wimbledon, London

Status: Completed

Type: Residential

Completion date: 2026

A series of zinc-clad dormer extensions articulate the intervention externally, increasing usable floor area while sitting comfortably within the existing roofscape. Their crisp geometry reads as a contemporary layer, carefully balanced against the original form.
Internally, the scheme is unified by a restrained palette of natural materials. Timber-clad joinery is used to shape thresholds, storage and enclosure, while earthy clay renders bring softness and depth to the spaces. This approach creates a calm, tactile environment in which the master suite unfolds as a sequence of fluid zones-sleeping, dressing and bathing-rather than a series of enclosed rooms.
The connection to the new level is central to the project. A reworked, airy staircase introduces light into the heart of the plan and establishes a strong visual relationship between floors. This is anchored by a double-height bookcase, which operates as both a functional element and a spatial device, reinforcing the sense of vertical continuity.
Elsewhere, existing bathrooms are reconfigured to improve usability and coherence. A single tile is employed throughout, with variation achieved through changes in orientation and laying pattern, allowing each space to feel distinct while maintaining a unified material language.

The result is a holistic transformation of the upper level—one that extends beyond added space to create a considered, materially rich and spatially connected retreat within the roof.
